Edna's Quilts

My art is more than Art Quilts, it’s an emotional journey filled with pleasant memories. I have had a fascination with fabric for quite a few years. It started with me helping my mom recycle our worn out clothing in to fabric pieces for a bed quilt. She taught me how to remove waistbands from skirts and pants and square off the fabric in preparation for the quilts.  We had a jar for the buttons and a bag for the zippers. I at the time was not interested in constructing the quilt; I found satisfaction in the preparation work.

My mom made quilts by hand because she did not have a sewing machine plus she didn’t know how to use one. I tried the needle and thread bit but was turned off by the constant pricking of my fingers. I learned to sew by machine in high school and for a long time made my own clothing.

When my grandfather purchased me my first sewing machine I was able to teach my mom how to use it for sewing.  But it was not until I was an adult with 4 children of my own that I enrolled in art school and learned how to enhance fabric with dyes and paints, etc.

With the early training with my mom and my high school sewing, plus what I learned in college, my art quilts began. Although fabric is not my only medium of art, it is my first love.

I enjoy the entire creative process of telling a story with the fabric. My ideas come to me in dreams and from talking to people or listening to a favorite song, etc. In essence I draw ideas from my every day existence.

When I create specifically for someone other than myself, I want to hear their story, so that I can get an emotional feeling of what it is they really want. I try to marry their ideas with my creativity to create a one of a kind art quilt that is just for them.
